Blurb (as on Goodreads):
Miryem is the daughter and granddaughter of moneylenders… but her father isn’t a very good one. Free to lend and reluctant to collect, he has loaned out most of his wife’s dowry and left the family on the edge of poverty–until Miryem steps in. Hardening her heart against her fellow villagers’ pleas, she sets out to collect what is owed–and finds herself more than up to the task. When her grandfather loans her a pouch of silver pennies, she brings it back full of gold.
But having the reputation of being able to change silver to gold can be more trouble than it’s worth–especially when her fate becomes tangled with the cold creatures that haunt the wood, and whose king has learned of her reputation and wants to exploit it for reasons Miryem cannot understand.
Spinning Silver is a fantasy that feels so real. Miriyam, Wanda and Irina have their differences, both in terms of fate and social position. But what’s common is that these three women are strong, independent and responsible. The would do what it takes to protect their family and their people. Spinning Silver has two villains- Chernobog and Staryk King Bith are evil but under completely different circumstances.
A retelling of the German Folklore Rumpelstiltskin, the author has given it a distinct shape and her own personal touch. The plot was not predictable at any point, the trill remained throughout and there was always something new to look forward to. The changing POVs provides the reader with all the necessary angles to fully understand the characters and the plot.
The characterization was flawless, each character was given a distinct nature and background. The plot has been written in a way that we get to know about each character without compromising with the excitement or sounding too boring. There wasn’t a love story involved at any point and hence, the entire focus stayed on emotions other than love.
I might have skimmed through a couple of paragraphs because I found them unnecessary, but the overall story was perplexing.
Recommended to lovers of mythology and folklore retelling.
